Why ‘Tracks of the Missing’ is perfect for your high school English classroom

‘Tracks of the Missing’ (Magabala 2022) is an excellent novel study choice for teachers of secondary English Grades 9-10.

‘Tracks of the Missing’ is a YA suspense thriller set in the Australian outback. We follow Deklan Archer and his Elder grandfather as they track through bushlands looking for a busload of missing Year 12 students. The novel seamlessly incorporates discussions of First Nations issues that allow for deep discussion and learning: invasion, intergenerational trauma, Stolen Generations, stolen wages, fair wage, racism, the Apology and more. This text is engaging, edge of your seat and deep in its exploration of Australian issues.

‘Tracks of the Missing’ allows teachers to cover their commitments to Australian Curriculum- Cross Curriculum Priorities-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures. Co-written by a First Nations author, Carl Merrison, this text addresses First Nations issues from First Nations perspectives.

This text can essentially be a ‘pick up and go text’ with lots of resources to reduce teacher workload. Full teaching resources are available here: website shop and TPT store.
