🚪🧡Importance of DOOR books🧡🚪

A ‘door’ book is a book that shows readers new worlds- new pathways, opportunities, alternative realities. It might be a book about fish and underwater life, a book about birds in a nest, a book about the past, or the future, a book about a new version of reality.

These books encourage readers to ‘think outside the box’, ‘imagine what life could be like’, as well as develop empathy for those who live a very different life than their own (people in the past, animals, old people, people in war etc). These books help build critical thinkers, compassionate readers, curious thinkers, as well as spark a passion for reading.

So how do you encourage reading of ‘door’ books?
💜Provide a range of books from different locations, settings and times.
💜Provide books with non-human characters, or characters from a different heritage than their own.
💜Show books that start similar to your child’s lived experience- but then the character goes off on an adventure that shows a new path, new opportunity or new way of being for the child. It is like a path or a guide so they know it can be travelled by them in real life… or is travelled by the character so they don’t have to.
💜Learn about your child’s interests- so you can guide some book choices for them.

What is your favourite ‘door’ book?
