Getting your ideas on the page

April 18, 2021

Sometimes getting ideas out of your head and onto the page is hard.

We totally get it. When Carl and I decide to co-author a book together it is even harder- not only to get both of our ideas on the page but also to then mash the different ideas together into a book that is actually good!

Sometimes you aren’t in the mood to write. Sometimes inspiration hasn’t hit you. Sometimes your writing feels like a chore.

Here are a few of our hints and tips to help you get the ideas from your head and onto the page:

  • Set a timer (5 minutes is usually good) and write non stop no matter what it is about.
  • Read a good book, your old favourites or a new book on the topic you are trying to write about.
  • Go for a long walk and daydream up all the additional ideas you can- write them in a notebook, your phone notes app or do a voice memo.
  • Voice record your story.
  • Write your story ideas in dot points and then fill out the rest later.

The trick is you can only edit what you have written down, you can only polish the words you have written, you can only publish what you have written down. You can’t do anything if you don’t have something!
