First Nations AFL books in 2023

February 10, 2023

We are so pumped that 2023 AFL season is about to start for 2023 (kick off in March!!)

I (Carl) am a HUGE footy fan. I have always played since a kid kicking around on red dirt ovals, playing at school, being a founding member of Clontarf Academy at Halls Creek District High School, playing for the Halls Creek Hawks, coaching the Halls Creek Hawks senior men’s team, coaching the Lismore Swans women’s team and Coolangatta women’s teams. I was the Kimberley Spirit Talent Elite Pathway Coordinator in 2021 and 2020 and in 2018 I was the recipient of the Brisbane Lions Jesaulenko Internship. I hold my Level 3 AFL Coach certification, Undergraduate Degree in Sports Leadership and Development, Specialist Certificate in Coaching Female Athletes, Advanced Certificate in Identifying and Developing Young AFL Talent and Cert IV Youth Work. Sooooo it’s safe to say I am into all things AFL. And that might be why it plays a big role in many of my books including Tracks of the Missing (Magabala 2022), My Deadly Boots (Lothian 2022) and Backyard Sports (Lothian 2023).

So if you are looking for deadly AFL books with First Nations characters my books are for you! Each book comes with deadly FREE teacher resources and ultimate teaching packs to help you use them in classrooms too!

  • My Deadly Boots (Lothian 2022): An empowering, uplifting picture book about what it is that makes you who you are. A joyous, empowering story about finding confidence within yourself, boots or no boots.
  • Tracks of the Missing (Magabala 20220): A middle reader or YA suspense thriller (think Aussie Goosebumps) that follows Deklan Archer as he races to find a busload of missing students… so he can get back in time to participate in an AFL regional draft opportunity.
  • Backyard Footy from the Backyard Sports series with Lothian in July 2023: Jy is playing football alone in his small backyard in the Kimberley, but when he accidentally kicks the ball over the fence, a footy adventure begins! Footy by yourself is fun but playing with mates is better. The first title in a joyful black&write! Fellowship-winning series, where the fun only grows with family and friends!

But there are also other deadly football books by Australian authors as well! I wonder if you have read any of these books?
