A ‘window’ book is a book that allows readers to ‘look inside someone else’s life’. Through ‘waliking a mile’ in someone else’s life through a book- readers are encouraged to develop understanding, empathy, and compassion. We can’t care about what we don’t know about. These kinds of books spark curiosity for readers to begin to learn more about different people, places and experiences.
⭐Have a diverse range of books from diverse creators on your bookshelves. ⭐Role model diverse reading habits as a life long learner and reader. ⭐Celebrate diverse books in classrooms, library displays, by attending events by diverse creators. ⭐Encourage reflection when reading books about characters, people, places and lived experiences different from their own. Find similarities, explore differences out of a place of curiosity not othering, ask questions, consider their point of view, consider how we would feel in their shoes. You might ask questions to spark discussions: How can we show empathy and understanding with their situation? What might happen if we faced the same challenges they did? What can we learn and celebrate together? What might not suit us and our lives? How might we interact with a real life person like this character?
